A smaller implant is a treatment choice
The term mini implant generally refers to a smaller-diameter implant. Designs and intended uses differ. Ask which system is proposed, what it would support and why it is being considered for your particular space or denture. Size alone cannot establish suitability.
A mini implant is still placed in bone and involves a surgical procedure. Do not assume that it avoids healing, risks or the need for further treatment. Its use should follow examination and planning.
Clarify the restoration and maintenance
Ask whether the replacement teeth would be removable or fixed and how they attach to the implants. Discuss the number and position of implants, the available bone and the forces on the restoration. Ask what evidence supports the proposed use in your circumstances.
Find out how you would clean it, which components may wear and who would manage repairs. A smaller implant does not automatically mean a lower total fee or an equivalent option for every standard implant plan. Obtain a current estimate.
Understand limitations before deciding
Implant surgery can cause pain, swelling, bleeding or infection. Other risks include failure to integrate with the bone and injury to nearby teeth, nerves or the sinus. Gum and bone problems or loose and damaged components can develop later. Ask which risks apply to your proposed treatment.
Discuss alternatives such as a suitable bridge or removable denture, and whether leaving the space under review is reasonable. Before invasive or irreversible treatment, you may wish to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner.
