Clarify what the proposed teeth will be
Implants can support replacement teeth across part or all of a dental arch. A fixed bridge and a removable implant-retained denture have different designs and maintenance needs. Ask which is proposed and whether you would remove it for cleaning. The number of missing teeth does not by itself determine the number of implants.
Assessment should consider the remaining teeth, gums, bone, bite and your health. Remaining teeth should not be removed simply to fit a preferred package; ask about their condition, prospects and the alternatives to extraction.
Plan the stages and daily care
Ask about any preliminary treatment, healing periods and temporary teeth. Immediate temporary teeth may not be suitable in every case and do not eliminate healing or follow-up. Discuss eating, cleaning and practical support during recovery.
You will need access for daily cleaning around the implants and prosthesis. Ask for a demonstration and a written estimate that includes the relevant surgical and restorative stages. Repair or replacement of components may be needed later.
Balance benefits and risks
Implant surgery can cause pain, swelling, bleeding or infection. Other risks include failure to integrate with the bone and injury to nearby teeth, nerves or the sinus. Gum and bone problems or loose and damaged components can develop later. Ask which risks apply to your proposed treatment.
Discuss alternatives such as a suitable bridge or removable denture, and whether leaving the space under review is reasonable. Before invasive or irreversible treatment, you may wish to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner.
