Spark and Invisalign are both clear aligner systems. Each straightens teeth with a series of removable, custom-made trays, and they treat a similar range of cases. The main differences are the company that makes them, the tray material and the software your dentist uses to plan the tooth movements. At our practice, Spark is estimated at $500 less than Invisalign.
This article explains what the two systems share, where they differ and how we help you decide. It is general information, not a substitute for an assessment.

What Spark and Invisalign have in common
- Trays are made from scans or impressions of your teeth
- You wear them for most of the day and take them out to eat, drink anything other than plain water, and clean your teeth
- Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip
- Before starting, you review a digital simulation of the planned movement. It is a planning aid, not a guaranteed result
- Regular reviews track progress, and retainers are needed afterwards to hold the result
Neither system is invisible. Both can be noticed up close, especially when attachments are used.
Where they differ
The manufacturer
Invisalign is made by Align Technology. Spark is made by Ormco, a long-established orthodontic company that also makes brackets and wires. Both supply aligners through dentists and orthodontists, who plan and supervise treatment.
The tray material
Invisalign trays use a material Align calls SmartTrack. Spark trays use TruGEN, which Ormco says is designed for clarity and stain resistance, with polished, scalloped edges for comfort. How a tray feels is individual. Some patients notice a difference in fit or feel between systems and others don’t.
The planning software
Your dentist plans Invisalign treatment in ClinCheck and Spark treatment in Ormco’s Approver software. Both show the planned tooth movement step by step and let the dentist place attachments where needed. Ormco says Approver also allows cut-outs, hooks and bite ramps to be added to the plan.
Is Spark better than Invisalign?
Neither system is better for everyone. Each manufacturer publishes its own comparisons, and these are marketing claims rather than independent clinical evidence. For most people, the outcome depends more on an accurate diagnosis, a well-designed plan and wearing the trays as prescribed than on the brand.
We recommend a system after assessing your teeth, gums and bite, and explain why. For some cases, fixed braces or a specialist orthodontist may be more appropriate than either.
Is Spark cheaper than Invisalign?
Yes, by $500. Our current price guide estimates Invisalign treatment at $4,200 to $8,990 and Spark or Angel Aligner treatment at $3,700 to $8,490. Where you fall within each range depends on how much movement is needed, the number of aligners and whether refinements are needed.
Your first clear aligner consultation is complimentary. Interest-free payment plans are available through external providers, subject to approval.
Risks to know about
Both systems carry the same risks. These include soreness with new trays, temporary speech changes and gum irritation. Other risks are decay if hygiene slips, root shortening and planned movements that are not fully achieved. Read more about treatment risks, recovery and alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
Does Spark work as well as Invisalign?
Both can achieve planned tooth movement in suitable cases when the trays are worn as prescribed. Results depend on the case, the plan and how consistently the trays are worn, rather than the brand alone.
Do Spark aligners stain less than Invisalign?
Ormco says its TruGEN material is designed to resist staining. Tea, coffee and red wine can still mark any aligner, so take your trays out when drinking anything other than plain water.
Which is more comfortable, Spark or Invisalign?
Comfort is individual. Most people feel pressure for a day or two with each new tray, whichever system they use.
Can I switch from Invisalign to Spark during treatment?
It is sometimes possible, but it usually means new records and a new treatment plan. Talk to your dentist about the costs and timing before deciding.
