Invisible Braces: Understanding Clear Aligners

Spark Aligners at Sydney CBD Dentistry

Spark is a clear aligner system made by Ormco, a US orthodontic company. Like other aligners, it uses a series of removable trays to move teeth gradually. Sydney CBD Dentistry offers Spark alongside Invisalign and Angel Aligner at our practice at 70 Pitt Street.

Whether Spark suits you depends on your teeth, gums and bite. We assess those first, and we’ll tell you if another system, fixed braces or a specialist referral would be more appropriate.

What Are Spark Aligners?

Spark trays are made from a material Ormco calls TruGEN. Ormco says the material is designed for clarity and stain resistance, and that the trays have polished, scalloped edges for comfort. Your dentist plans the tooth movements on Ormco’s Approver software, which lets them place attachments, cut-outs and bite ramps where your case needs them.

As with any aligner, Spark trays are not invisible. They can be noticed up close, especially if attachments are bonded to your teeth.

How Spark Aligners Work

  1. Assessment. We examine your teeth, gums and bite, take x-rays if needed and talk through your goals and alternatives. Your first Spark consultation is complimentary.
  2. Records. Scans or impressions and photos of your teeth are used to build your plan.
  3. Your Spark plan. We review a digital simulation of the planned movement with you. It shows the intended path, not a guaranteed outcome. You receive a written estimate before you go ahead.
  4. Wearing Spark. You wear each set for most of the day. Ormco recommends 22 hours. You move to the next set every one to two weeks, as directed.
  5. Reviews and retainers. Regular check-ups track progress. Retainers after treatment help keep teeth in their new position.

Spark vs Invisalign

Spark and Invisalign follow the same principle. Both use custom trays planned on software, worn most of the day and changed in stages. The main differences are the company, the tray material and the planning tools.

Neither system is better for everyone. Some patients prefer one tray feel over another, and some cases suit one system’s planning features. We explain our recommendation at your consultation. Spark vs Angel Aligner

Angel Aligner is made by Angelalign Technology and uses a material called masterControl S, planned on iOrtho software. Like Spark, it treats a similar range of crowding, spacing and bite concerns, subject to assessment. Read more on our Angel Aligners page.

Who Spark May Suit

Spark may be an option if you have mild to moderate crowding or spacing, some bite concerns, or teeth that have shifted since earlier braces. You also need to be able to wear trays consistently.

Spark may not be appropriate if you have active gum disease, which Ormco advises should be treated first, or a complex jaw or bite problem. In those cases, braces or a specialist orthodontist may be a better route.

Spark Aligners Cost in Sydney CBD

Our current price guide estimates Spark treatment at $3,700 to $8,490, $500 less than our Invisalign estimate of $4,200 to $8,990. The final figure depends on how much movement your teeth need, how many aligners your plan uses and whether refinements are needed.

Your first Spark consultation is complimentary. Your written estimate will show what is included, such as records, aligners, reviews and retainers. Interest-free payment plans are available through external providers, subject to approval. Estimates are valid for six months.

Risks and Things to Know

Spark carries the same risks as other aligner treatment. These include pressure or soreness with new trays and temporary speech changes. Other risks are gum irritation, a higher risk of decay if hygiene slips, root shortening and movements that are not fully achieved. Teeth can drift back without retainers.
