Match the service to the problem
Urgent dental care begins with assessing the symptoms and their severity. Tooth pain, swelling, a broken tooth or a dental injury may need prompt attention, but the appropriate setting depends on what has happened. An urgent dental appointment is different from hospital emergency care.
Call 000 for breathing or swallowing difficulty, severe uncontrolled bleeding or a serious head or facial injury. Rapidly spreading swelling or marked illness also needs urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for the practice to reopen if these symptoms occur.
Check availability directly
Call Sydney CBD Dentistry on (02) 8090 1105 before travelling where possible. Describe the symptoms, when they began and any injury. Ask whether the practice can assess you within the timeframe advised, and where to seek help if it cannot. See our urgent appointment information for availability and contact details.
Do not assume that the practice provides round-the-clock, weekend or holiday treatment. Walk-in access, same-day treatment and a particular waiting time are not guaranteed. If the practice is closed, contact an available urgent dental service or call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222 for health advice.
Understand what the appointment may involve
The dentist may examine the affected area and recommend imaging or another assessment before discussing care. The first visit may provide a temporary measure, definitive treatment or a referral, depending on the findings and available services.
Ask what is proposed, the expected benefit, risks, alternatives and fees. Obtain a follow-up plan and instructions for worsening symptoms. An urgent appointment does not mean that extraction or any other procedure is automatically required, or that the problem will be fully resolved in one visit.
