Caring for Your Child’s Teeth at Home

Build a routine as teeth appear

Caring for your child’s mouth starts before all their teeth have arrived. As teeth appear, use a small, soft toothbrush and help with cleaning. Ask a dental practitioner about the appropriate toothpaste, amount and technique for your child’s age and risk of decay.

Children need adult help while they develop the skills to brush effectively. Make cleaning part of a regular routine, and ask when and how to clean between teeth that touch. Mouthwash is not a substitute for brushing and is not appropriate for every child.

Food, drinks and dental visits

Frequent sugary drinks and snacks can contribute to tooth decay. Discuss your child’s usual eating and drinking habits with the dental team and ask about practical changes. Prevention reduces risk but does not mean treatment will never be needed.

The first dental visit is recommended when the first tooth appears or by age one, whichever comes first. Future review intervals depend on your child’s needs. The dentist can assess tooth development, discuss daily care and explain whether further assessment or referral is appropriate.

Do not assume every symptom is teething

Teething can make gums uncomfortable, but a fever should not simply be attributed to it. Seek medical advice if your child has a fever or seems unwell. Dental pain, facial swelling, an injury or a change that concerns you also warrants professional advice.

If treatment is recommended, ask why it is needed, what alternatives are available and what could happen if it is delayed. Some children may need referral to a registered specialist paediatric dentist. No particular treatment or outcome can be determined from an online article.
