Helping a Child Who Feels Anxious About Dental Visits

Recognise what your child finds difficult

Anxiety about a dental visit can relate to unfamiliar sounds, sensations, a previous experience or uncertainty about what will happen. It does not mean a child is being difficult. Tell the dental team what your child is worried about so the approach can be discussed before the appointment.

Try a calm, age-appropriate explanation of the visit. Give your child an opportunity to ask questions. Avoid frightening stories, threats or promises that they will feel nothing, as these can make later experiences harder to understand.

Discuss practical support

Ask whether the practitioner can explain or demonstrate an instrument before using it. A familiar comfort item, agreed pauses and a pace suited to the child may help. These approaches can be useful, but none will remove anxiety for every child.

An examination may need to be staged over visits when clinically appropriate. The dentist should explain the urgency of any problem and the options if your child cannot tolerate the proposed care. Referral to a specialist paediatric dentist or another suitable service may be recommended.

Sedation needs individual assessment

Sedation is not a routine solution for every worried child. If it is being considered, ask who would provide it, where it would take place, what monitoring is required and what alternatives are available. Availability at Sydney CBD Dentistry must be confirmed with the practice.

Sedation has risks and does not always mean a child will be asleep or have no memory of treatment. Medical conditions, medicines, fasting requirements and recovery arrangements need discussion with the treating team. Parents and carers should receive an explanation of the proposed care before giving consent.
