Two approaches to discuss
Dentist-supervised whitening may be performed in the clinic or with a prescribed take-home system. In-clinic treatment uses a planned application under professional supervision. Take-home care requires you to follow instructions for the product, tray use and duration.
Whitening toothpastes mainly act on surface stains and are not equivalent to every bleaching treatment. A stronger product or a named light system does not by itself establish a better or more suitable result.
Compare supervision and expectations
Ask how the dentist will assess the cause of staining, protect the soft tissues and respond to sensitivity. Discuss which method suits your mouth and circumstances, including existing restorations and previous reactions to products.
Do not combine treatments or increase the amount or exposure time without advice. Results vary and can change over time. Ask about review and whether further treatment is appropriate rather than assuming repeated whitening is necessary.
Understand the risks of either method
Whitening can cause tooth sensitivity and irritation or chemical burns to the gums and other soft tissues. The degree and duration of colour change vary. Fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten with natural teeth, so a mismatch may become more noticeable.
A dental assessment helps identify the cause of discolouration and whether whitening is appropriate. Discuss alternatives, including leaving your natural colour unchanged. Follow the prescribed product instructions and contact your dentist about significant or persistent symptoms.
