Match care to your child’s needs
Choosing a dental practice involves more than the wording on its website. Consider your child’s age, symptoms, medical history and the support they may need during appointments. Ask the practice which practitioners currently see children and how an initial assessment is arranged.
A welcoming environment can be helpful, but toys or a particular room design do not establish a practitioner’s qualifications or whether the setting is suitable for every child. Current staffing, facilities and available services should be confirmed directly.
Questions for the first appointment
Ask how the examination will be explained to your child, whether a parent or carer can remain involved, and how breaks or communication needs will be managed. Let the team know about any previous difficulty with dental or medical visits.
If treatment is proposed, ask about the reason, expected benefit, risks, alternatives and timing. Request a written estimate and an explanation of what is included. A child’s dental care plan may change as their teeth develop and their needs become clearer.
Know when referral may help
A general dentist can provide many types of children’s dental care. A paediatric dentist is a registered dental specialist, and a referral may be appropriate for complex needs. This article does not identify Sydney CBD Dentistry’s practitioners as paediatric specialists.
Ask whether monitoring or preventive care alone is suitable, and what could happen if recommended care is delayed. The aim is an informed plan for your child, rather than a promise that an appointment will always be easy or that treatment can always be avoided.
