Veneers cover the front surface of selected teeth with porcelain or composite resin. They may change tooth shape or colour, or address some chips and surface defects. They are an optional cosmetic treatment, and healthy teeth do not need veneers simply because of normal differences in appearance.
Suitability depends on your teeth, gums, bite and goals. Results vary, and veneers involve limitations, maintenance and potential complications.
Porcelain veneers are custom-made ceramic coverings. Composite veneers use tooth-coloured resin shaped onto the tooth. The appropriate material and amount of tooth preparation vary.
Ask about alternatives such as no cosmetic treatment, a smaller repair, whitening where suitable, or orthodontic assessment for tooth position. Veneers do not move teeth or treat gum disease.
An assessment should consider oral health, existing restorations, your bite and any grinding or clenching. Discuss the change you want and what can realistically be achieved.
Enamel removal is irreversible. Take time to consider the proposal and seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified practitioner before an invasive procedure.
Porcelain veneers are usually made from an impression or digital scan and bonded to prepared teeth. Composite resin is generally built directly on the teeth. The number of visits, tooth preparation, appearance and repair options differ. Neither material is the right choice for everyone.
Possible problems include sensitivity, chipping, debonding, staining at the edges, gum irritation and decay around the restoration. Tooth preparation can create a continuing need for restorations. Further treatment may be needed if a tooth develops problems. Ask your dentist to explain the risks relevant to your teeth.
Continue brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth. Follow individual advice about reviews, hard foods and habits that may damage restorations. Ask whether grinding protection is appropriate. Contact the practice if a veneer becomes loose, uncomfortable or damaged.
There is no guaranteed lifespan. Materials, bite forces, oral health and care affect how veneers perform. Repairs or replacement may be needed over time, with additional costs. Ask about likely maintenance before accepting a treatment plan.
