Whitening may lighten some stains on natural teeth. It is an optional cosmetic treatment and is not suitable for everyone. Results vary; fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten. Sensitivity and gum irritation can occur.
Your dentist will assess the cause of discolouration and your oral health before discussing whitening. Options may include prescribed take-home whitening or in-chair treatment. You can also choose no whitening, or cleaning where surface deposits are the concern.
Take-home whitening uses trays and a whitening product according to your dentist’s instructions. The amount of gel, wear time and treatment duration depend on the product and your circumstances.
Do not increase use without advice. Stop and contact your dentist if sensitivity or irritation is significant or persistent. Keep whitening products away from children.
In-chair whitening is provided after a dental assessment. The appointment length, response and need for any further care vary. No particular shade change or duration of results is guaranteed.
Existing restorations do not whiten and may look different from surrounding teeth after treatment. Discuss this before proceeding.
All whitening methods can cause sensitivity or gum irritation. Existing decay, exposed roots, cracks or gum disease may need attention before whitening is considered.
The cause of discolouration affects whether whitening will help. Some stains respond poorly. Results can fade or change over time, and repeated treatment is not automatically necessary.
Follow the prescribed instructions and seek advice about symptoms. Your dentist can discuss whether to pause, modify or stop treatment. Alternatives may include no treatment or professional cleaning for surface staining.
